thanks to mister sinclair day for his erudition on the subject. I think this surely underlies the pointlessness of the debacle in Iraq when the west is left helpless to intervene in morally pressing conflicts such as these, having used up most of its political capital in the woefully misguided imperialist mission in Iraq. these are the kind of things economists refer to as 'oportunity cost' - what you're not going to be able to do after you choose a certain path of action. it is precisely these consideratons that were not taken into account by the current US administration. short-sighted doesnt even begin to cover it.
